June 16th Traverse City Fishing Report

Fishing conditions on West Grand Traverse Bay remain excellent, offering anglers a reliable and rewarding experience as we move deeper into the early summer season. Recent outings have consistently yielded limit catches of Lake trout, making this one of the most productive times of year for both seasoned fishermen and newcomers alike. In addition to the strong Lake trout bite, anglers are also encountering occasional steelhead, whitefish, and Cisco, adding variety and excitement to each trip on the water.

The area has benefited from stable early summer weather patterns, which have helped maintain relatively cool surface water temperatures. These conditions are ideal for fishing, as they allow anglers to target fish in shallower areas where they are actively feeding. Unlike later in the season when fish tend to move deeper, the current conditions make for more accessible and engaging fishing, especially for those who enjoy seeing steady action throughout their outing.

Proven Lake trout techniques continue to deliver excellent results. Traditional setups, such as spinning glows paired with cowbells, rotators, or Spin Doctors, have been particularly effective at attracting fish. These setups create the flash and vibration needed to draw strikes, even when fish are scattered. Charters across the bay have also reported success using smaller, brightly colored lures, some enhanced with glow tape to increase visibility in varying light conditions. This combination of classic methods and small refinements has helped maintain a consistent and productive bite.

Another exciting aspect of the current fishing conditions is the size of the fish being caught. Many charters are reporting Lake trout of impressive proportions, offering anglers the chance to reel in trophy-worthy catches. These larger fish not only provide a rewarding challenge but also create memorable experiences, with strong runs and sustained fights that add to the thrill of the day.

Reelin Leland Fishing Charters is pleased to announce an exciting addition to its team. Veteran West Grand Traverse Bay charter captain Jeff Shaw is now available to captain the vessel “Leelanautical.” Captain Shaw brings years of experience to the area, having previously operated with Traverse City Charter Fishing and most recently serving as captain of the well-known vessel “Well Adjusted.” His deep knowledge of the bay, combined with his professional yet approachable style, makes him a valuable asset to the team and a trusted guide for anglers of all skill levels.
