Fishing in Lake Michigan consists of the mighty King Salmon, Lake Trout, Steelhead, Coho Salmon and Brown Trout.
What time of the year do you fish?
Fishing runs from May to early October.

What do I need to bring on board?
Please bring sunglasses, soft sole shoes, sun screen, a jacket, and a cooler to take home your catch! When we return your fish will be cleaned. Alcoholic beverages are permitted on the trip.
Will I need a fishing license?
Yes. If you are 17 years of age or older you need a fishing license to fish in the state of Michigan. However, anyone under the age of 17 can fish without a license. A license can be purchased via the internet by visiting the Michigan Department of Natural Resources website or clicking here.
Are there bathrooms on the Leelanaut and Leelanautical?
Yes, there are bathrooms similar to what you would see on an airplane.
Where do these fishing charters depart from?
The LEELANAUT departs from Leland Harbor in Fishtown, Suttons Bay Village launch ramp in Suttons Bay, and Elmwood Township Marina and Park in Traverse City.
The LEELANAUTICAL departs from Elmwood Township Marina and Park in Traverse City.
Do I need to bring fishing equipment or bait?
No, we supply all of the fishing gear & bait you will need on our Lake Michigan fishing charters!
When is the best time of year to go fishing on Lake Michigan?
The peak season for Lake Michigan fishing typically runs from late April through October with the best salmon runs from mid May through end of summer.
How long are your fishing charters?
Charter trips range from 4 to 9 hours depending on the package you choose. Morning trips tend to be most productive.
Can kids come on the fishing trip?
Absolutely! Kids are welcome and often enjoy the excitement.
What happens if the weather is bad?
Safety is the top priority. If the captain cancels due to unsafe weather, we’ll work with you to reschedule or refund your trip.
Do you clean the fish we catch?
Yes, when in Traverse City fish cleaning and bagging are included with your charter at no extra charge. When in Leland the fish can be professionally cleaned at Carlson’s Fishery. Be sure to bring a cooler to take them home.
Can we keep the fish we catch?
Yes! As long as it meets Michigan’s legal size and bag limits, you can keep your catch and enjoy it however you like.
How many people can go on a charter trip?
Our charters typically accommodate up to 6 passengers per trip, in line with U.S. Coast Guard regulations for charter vessels.
Can I bring alcohol on board?
Yes, adult guests may bring beer or wine in moderation. Please avoid glass containers and hard liquor for safety reasons.
Will I get seasick on Lake Michigan?
Most guests are fine, but if you’re prone to motion sickness, we recommend taking preventative medication like Dramamine before the trip.
Are gratuities for the captain or crew expected?
Gratuities are not required but are greatly appreciated. A customary tip is 15–20% if you enjoyed your experience.
