The fishing in northern Michigan for Lake Trout and King Salmon is definitely in its prime right now. We can expect the Fishing to stay strong for the next 6 to 8 weeks. And it will be strong both from the port of Leland and West Grand Traverse Bay the port of Traverse City. From the port of Leland the King salmon are starting to stage around the Manitou Islands and banks or deep cuts near shore. Many boats have been returning to port with heavy boxes of fish. It seems that any day the best bate could be spoons or plus or flashers and fly or meat rigs or all of the above. There is definitely a stable thermocline that has congregated fish where you find 50 degree water. Some fish are in warmer water and some are in colder water. The morning and evening times have produced the best bites of the day.
West Grand Traverse Bay from the port of Traverse City has more and more King Salmon entering and moving into the southern part of the Bay. There is bait fish to hold these fish as both salmon and lake trout are in their final months before they spawn. The best thing about West Grand Traverse Bay is we can fish there in almost any wind conditions. August is such a great time to go fishing.
