June 29th Fishing Report

This week fishy has been a little bit more challenging than the previous weeks. Last Saturday a big storm came through and the high winds and the heat that came after it really caused to change to the Manitou passage of Lake Michigan. The storm brought in warm water and we had to start fishing as deep as 180 feet to find the cold water where the trout and salmon would be located. This vent that we were fishing much deeper, and therefore we use less lines to try to locate the fish. When Fishing deep we have to be cautious not to tangle our lines so we were successful by utilizing less lines. We were able to find some salmon, but they didn’t seem to be as many salmon in the area out around the Manitou Island. We’re hoping that as Summer develops a thermocline that will be able to locate those salmon. We did have good success with spoons and meat rigs for salmon. The lake trout also went deep and we had to fish deep water flats, as deep as 150 feet down. The lake trout were taking cowbells and spin and glows as well as glow spoons.

Grand Traverse Bay, from Traverse City, had excellent fishing. The storm did not affect the bay as it did out in Lake Michigan. The south winds pushed warm water out of the bay and the cold water upwelling brought favorable conditions to Fishing Lake Trout. There seems to be a good population of trout in the Bay and soon there will be more salmon. We have available dates in July for West Grand Traverse Bay. Please contact us to  schedule your adventure.
