June 22 2025 Fishing Report

Fishing this week continued to be excellent. The week started off with calm seas and cooler temperatures. The weekend ended up with high winds and warming temperatures to a heat wave. The lake trout fishing from the port of Leland was still strong on the shallow flats and drop offs. We used traditional baits of cowbells and spin and glows and spoons which have been effective all spring. The king salmon by the Manitou Islands seem to have gone into deeper water as well as as a lot of young and smaller fish were in the area. Spoons seem to be the best bait for catching salmon. However, we did catch a few on the flasher and fly and meat rig presentations.

Grand Traverse Bay continued to be strong excellent fishing for lake Trout. The fish were still in shallow water off the breaks and flats. There was a lot of bait fish in and around these areas. We are so lucky to have the protected Waters of West Grand Traverse Bay. When the wind starts to blow and Lake Michigan proper has waves of 5 to 10 feet were able to go into the bay and fish in a comfortable 1 foot or less wave water condition. So this past weekend we were able to get out and fish when a major storm went through and caused high wind and waves. Once the rain and lightning passed we went fishing. The high wind and waves continued on through Sunday and we still fished with good success on West Grand Tradition Bay from Traverse City.
